When it comes to squeezing maximum performance from a laptop, few people are as demanding as gamers. We all know that feeling when lag is cutting back the level of responsive feedback during gameplay, and one of the big culprits of this can be an overheating laptop.

When you consider the level of processing and CPU action that a laptop has to perform during the typical gaming session, it isn’t shocking that overheating can quickly become a serious issue. Hence, we’re going to take a look at a product designed to combat laptop overheating, the Cooler Master NotePal X3.

Thermaltake Laptop Cooling Pad

The NotePal X3 model from CoolerMaster is actually one of a series of laptop coolers from this manufacturer, which are all named NotePal. The X3 model is one of the heavier, more gaming specific models. It lacks the mobility of some others in the NotePal range but instead brings a more powerful fan to tackle serious heat.

The particular model first hit the market back in 2012. While it had no major upgrades in this time, it has sold in huge quantities and garnered a lot of happy users over that period.

Who Is This Cooling Pad Meant For?

As we said above, this product is mainly designed for cooling laptops that are being used in gaming. To achieve that it is both bigger and more powerful than similar models in the NotePal range, even when compared to many rival products.

While it is not a huge device, it is a little bigger than a truly portable laptop cooler. It is perfect for people who keep their laptop in one or two locations only, so it is not ideal for people who need true mobility to carry and use the cooling pad anywhere and everywhere.

What’s Included?

The box is pretty sparse really! You will get one cooling pad, pre-assembled and ready to go (minus removing all the packaging material of course.) There is also a USB power cable and a set of instructions.

Overview of Features

This model of cooling pad boasts a very high-performance, oversized (200mm), single fan. This helps to create excellent cooling abilities while keeping the noise generation as low as possible. The noise can peak a little if the fan is going at maximum, but you shouldn’t have to worry about that too often.

The product has a mesh surface for the laptop to rest on. Not only does this help with heat dissipation, but it also helps to give the pad a nice sturdy feeling. It is a little thicker than some pads, which does reduce the mobility a little.

On the other hand, the laptop will always feel secure when the laptop is placed on top. The pad also has two different height settings. This makes it easier to place the laptop into a position that is comfortable during use.

We also really liked the front vent on the device. It blows a very pleasant breeze onto your hands, helping to keep them cool and dry. That is a very nice feature that could come in handy
during some of the more frantic gaming sessions you may endure!

How to Get the Most Out of It

This cooling pad, as it is equipped with a fan, will mainly work by drawing heat away from the laptop bottom. In order for it to perform this role as efficiently as possible, it is recommended that the laptop itself is as clean as possible.

Firstly, the bottom of the laptop (which will sit on the laptop cooling pad) should be clean and free of stickers or other decoration. Next any or all air vents on the laptop should be clear and free of obstructions and dust. If you keep your laptop as clean as possible, it can really help the cooling pad to dissipate heat efficiently.

Alternative

We’ve mentioned it already that if there is a drawback to this device, it is the fact that is a slightly larger cooling pad, certainly in terms of product width. Obviously, Cooler Master has taken this decision in order to get more cooling power from the pad itself, so it does make sense!

That being said, if you are looking for a more portable laptop cooling option, then you could certainly try out the Cooler Master NotePal X-Lite II. It is also part of the excellent Cooler Master NotePal series of laptop coolers.

However, it is thinner and smaller than the X3. That means it doesn’t have quite the same cooling abilities but is far more mobile.

Conclusion

If you are searching for a high-quality gaming laptop cooler that brings a lot of cooling power, then this could be one of the best options for you. Yes, it does sacrifice a little mobility to do this, but the improvements in computing power this device can bring more to make up for such a drawback.
